Trump regime deletes key climate report
and axes legally-mandated climate reporting process
Climate change is expected to have a greater-than-average impact on Southwest Florida, and yet Republican elected officials continue to try to pretend it doesn't exist. Trump officials recently deleted the website that housed a legally mandated climate report for this year. We're publishing it here before the report itself can be "disappeared." Trump — who takes millions from the oil and gas industry — doesn’t want us talking about the climate crisis, so his administration buried the Fifth National Climate Assessment. These assessments have been produced by scientists every four years over the past two decades.
However, this year's report is still buried deep in the deep in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s website. We’re publishing it here so you can read it for yourself. You might want to take a few deep breaths before you start, though, because it contains alarming, grim news.
Five national climate assessments have been compiled since 2000 by researchers across a dozen US government agencies and outside scientists, providing a gold standard report to city and state officials, as well as the general public, of global heating and its impacts upon human health, agriculture, water supplies, air pollution and other aspects of American life.
But although the assessments are mandated to occur every four years under legislation passed by Congress in 1990, the Trump regime axed the online portal holding the reports, which went dark last week. A contract to support this work has also been torn up and researchers who were working on the next report, due around 2027, have been dismissed.
This information is relevant to every resident of Planet Earth, of course, but especially to those of us who live in Southwest Florida, where we will take the full brunt of climate change in the teeth every hurricane season.
To preserve the report itself, in case it, too, should be disappeared, we're posting it on this site. Click on the icon below to download a copy of the report.
