Sarasota GOP demands gay school board member resign; he’s staying put
August 16, 2025
Tom Edwards, who won re-election last year to the Sarasota County School Board, was recently named executive director of Project Pride SRQ, a community organization that supports Sarasota’s LGBTQ+ community. Among other initiatives he hopes to accomplish in his new job, Edwards has plans for a “peer-to-peer Support Squad” to help identify bullying and mobilize around victims.
Claiming this constitutes “a conflict of interest,” the Sarasota Republican Party called for Edwards’ resignation from the school board.

Bridget Ziegler also sits. She made headlines in 2023 when she and her husband were caught sourcing potential participants for their sexual threesomes. A police report obtained last year by the Florida Trident included a text from Ziegler to her husband stating, “Don’t come home until your dick is wet.”
Yet, the Sarasota Republican Party never requested her resignation.
Edwards has no intention of leaving. “I will continue to do the good School Board work that the community - from both sides of the aisle - overwhelmingly re-elected me to do,” he said in a statement posted on Pride SRQ’s website.
Sarasota Republicans are calling on county residents to contact the Florida Department of Education Commissioner in their continued attempt to get Edwards ousted.
